ROAD safety fears have been raised after a hole suddenly appeared in a Larkfield Road.

Councillor Ciano Rebecchi contacted the Tele last week after part of the road in Burns Square caved in without warning last week.

The hole is around five feet wide and five deep.

Councillor Rebecchi said: “If there’s not a burst pipe, what caused it?

“This is where the buses turn, kids cross there to go to the youth club and there’s a taxi rank. Folk walk along to the shops and back from church. There’s a lot of traffic about there.” He says that staff from Scottish Water who have been working in the area carried out an investigation earlier this week.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: “We have attended Burns Square to investigate the matter. We have a water main and a waste water main in the area but there are no bursts and both are operating normally.

“We have liaised with Inverclyde Council’s roads department and will assist them with any further enquiries, if required.” A spokesman for Inverclyde Council said there appeared to be localised subsidence. The hole has had since been filled in and the work is due to be finished today.
