A SAFETY warning has been issued to young people across Inverclyde to be careful around water this summer and prevent serious injury or death.

Gourock councillor Chris McEleny is urging youngsters to stay safe when out and about near lochs, reservoirs and the River Clyde during the school break.

Mr McEleny — who is the council’s representative on the Water and Leisure Safety Committee of the Scottish Accident Prevention Council — is asking people in Inverclyde to be vigilant and make sure the summer holidays do not end in tragedy.

The SNP councillor said: “As the school holidays start lots of children will likely at some point be close to water over the summer.

“Drowning is the third highest cause of death in children in the UK and I would ask people to take a moment to think water safety.

“Whether you’re a parent, a school teacher or someone that helps in a young people’s club visit the website www.drowningpreventionweek.org.uk for more advice.” The national campaign highlights the dangers children will face this summer and offers practical advice about how to stay safe in and around water.

Councillor McEleny added: “If you are going abroad this year then it is important to check if there is a lifeguard on duty at the pool or at the beach.

“However if staying at home it’s also important to remember that there are many reservoirs and dams throughout the area, not to mention the River Clyde.

“When the schools are off and the weather is good take note of the dangers these pose — more than a fifth of people that drown fall into the water accidentally.

“Remember some of these waters have strong currents so even if you think you are a good swimmer the safest way to enjoy an outdoor swim this year is by visiting Gourock Pool, where you can have peace of mind that there are always highly trained Inverclyde Leisure lifeguards on duty.”
