A GREENOCK physiotherapist is keeping top athletes in shape at the Commonwealth Games, the Tele can reveal.

Morag McMillan was chosen by West College Scotland (WCS) to work in the Games salon after coming out top of a course.

She says her stint at the Glasgow Games is the ‘opportunity of a lifetime’.

Morag, 33, is an activities co-ordinator at Greenock Medical Aid Society’s Glenfield Care Home.

They sent her on a course at WCS’s Greenock campus to do a national certificate in wellness, which includes massage and reflexology — applying pressure to the feet, hands, or ears with thumb, finger and hand techniques. The college then won the contract to run the salon at the athletes’ village, and asked students to volunteer to be tested to work there.

Morag said: “We had to do a personal statement and show our skills. I’m really pleased I was one of those chosen to go to the Games.” Morag’s already completed four 12-hour shifts at the village and has more to come.

She said: “The atmosphere is fantastic.

“There’s a big screen at the village showing all the events and the whole place is buzzing.

“I’ve been working mainly with athletes from other countries, including weightlifters and boxers. It’s just amazing and surreal to be there. I’ll never forget it!” Morag’s job at Glenfield involves encouraging the 36 residents to do various activities like carpet bowls, keep fit and memory and word games, and she has been telling them all about her experiences at the Games.

Medical Aid Society chief executive Charles Young said everyone is delighted at Morag’s success.

He said: “We asked Morag to go on a professional development course at the college, where she has done very well.

“And we were very happy to give her time off to work at the Games when she was selected.

“We are very proud of her.”
