A REFERENDUM debate between two Greenock-based MSPs is ON — after Labour’s Duncan McNeil said ‘yes’ to the challenge laid down by SNP man Stuart McMillan.

The Tele told last week how Mr McMillan had thrown down the gauntlet as the battle to win over vital undecided voters intensifies in the run-up to next month’s historic poll.

No-vote campaigner Mr McNeil has now formally written to his Yes Scotland political rival to confirm he is ready to take part.

He said: “I share your recognition of the need to engage with genuine undecided voters.” The terms and format of the debate are still to be finalised but arrangements are expected to be confirmed soon, with the vote just over a month away.

Tonight sees the first big televised debate of the campaign when First Minister Alex Salmond and Better Together figurehead Alistair Darling clash.

Now local MSPs Mr McMillan and Mr McNeil will follow suit, having agreed that a local debate can play a valuable role in helping people to make up their minds.

Mr McNeil said: “I believe it is in all of our interests that people have the information necessary, which in turn would increase turnout and bring about a conclusive result.” Nationalist Mr McMillan said: “September’s referendum is the biggest and most important election anyone in Inverclyde will likely ever vote in.

“I feel it is proper and correct if Duncan and myself, as MSPs from both sides of the campaign, debate head-to-head.

“We are both fully aware that there are many people in Inverclyde who are still undecided on the issue of independence.

“I believe a live debate between the area’s pro-union and pro-independence MSPs would be warmly welcomed.”
