A GREENOCK teenager is building a bright future for himself after landing a job with a major construction firm.

Julio Finlay has secured a permanent position with Wates Living Space after completing a work experience programme in partnership with local housing association River Clyde Homes.

The 18-year-old impressed bosses with his enthusiasm and progress throughout the programme.

When asked which aspects of his new role he enjoyed the most, Julio said: “I like working hard, and genuinely enjoy it all.” Julio joined the scheme facilitated by Youthbuild, Action for Children, which provides training, employment opportunities and support to young people. Bill Coghill, business director at Wates, said: “Thanks to Youthbuild and River Clyde Homes we have been able to give Julio a chance to secure permanent employment.

“Feedback from site has been very positive and we are delighted to have him on-board.” Wates is working with River Clyde Homes on a kitchen and bathroom refurbishment programme and three trainees started on a four-week trial period learning about plastering, joinery, plumbing and general site management.

Fiona Campbell, head of business resilience at River Clyde Homes, said: “From the very beginning, we have been committed to supporting the local economy by helping local youngsters gain training and workplace opportunities.

“We are grateful to our partnering contractor Wates for giving Julio a chance of employment, and I wish him every success in his new career.” A spokesperson for Wates said: “Wates is currently working with River Clyde Homes on an LHC framework delivering a series of refurbishment works including kitchen and bathroom replacements.”
