A GREENOCK nursery has said a huge thank you to grandparents who are the heart and soul of family life.

Hillend Children’s Centre recently invited them through the doors for a very special open day.

Staff at the centre wanted to let grandparents know how valued they are and recognise the vital role they play in the life of the nursery.

Starring on Grandparents Day was The Wherries’ Kenny Wilson, who brought along his guitar to lead everyone in a Scottish sing-a-long.

Hillend head of centre Lesley O’Hagan said: “Grandparents are so important in modern families.

“They are often the ones who look after children when their parents are at work, dropping them off and picking them up from nursery.

“We wanted them to get the chance to raise any questions they may have. These days are very important to let them see how they can play an important part in the children’s learning.

“We do it every year and, again, it was a very successful event.” Grandparents returned the compliments with some very positive feedback about their experience, thanking the nursery for the opportunity to see the children learn.

The youngsters and their grandparents also hugely enjoyed a chance to sing some traditional Scottish songs together at the end.

The Wherries’ Kenny and his guitar George led everyone in a rendition of old favourite ‘You cannae shove your granny off the bus’.

The children’s centre in the east end has more than 60 youngsters, around half of which have additional support needs.
