A FOUL-MOUTHED yob who violently struggled with four police officers after branding them ‘scumbags’ has been ordered to carry out unpaid work.

Julio Findlay, 18, had 150 hours added to an existing community payback order which was imposed on him previously for an almost identical offence.

Greenock Sheriff Court heard how police were called to a report of a ‘loud disturbance’ at the accused’s address in the town’s Finnart Street.

Prosecutor Pamela Brady said: “They tried to gain entry but were unable to.

“Officers were concerned for the safety of the accused and other persons in the flat — there was concern that the accused may have been assaulted. On speaking to him he was immediately aggressive towards police and began to shout and swear at them.

“The police told him that they required entry in order to confirm that there were no injured persons inside.

“Officers followed the accused into the flat and he immediately became aggressive again, calling the police ‘scumbags’.” Mrs Brady added: “He asked them if they had a warrant and continued with his abuse.

“The accused was told that his behaviour was such that he was being arrested.

“He began to struggle violently and lashed out with his arms and legs.

“The accused was eventually handcuffed and placed inside a police van.

“During a final check of the flat, a metal box containing scales and four clear plastic bags with cannabis inside were found.” Defence lawyer Ellen Macdonald said: “Mr Findlay is deeply ashamed of his behaviour.

“He started employment in July and since then there has been a complete turnaround in his conduct. There has been no offending since he got his job.” The court heard that Findlay still had nearly 20 hours of unpaid work remaining for a ‘directly analogous offence’. Sheriff Derek Hamilton gave him 12 months to carry out the additional 150 hours now imposed.
