An announcement had been expected later this week, but Justice Secretary Michael Matheson broke the news around 9am.
He said the prison did not fit with his 'vision of how a modern progressive country should be addressing female offending.' The £75 million women’s jail was intended as a replacement for Scotland’s women-only prison, Cornton Vale in Stirling.
