YOUNG music maestros may recognise one or two familiar faces at this year’s Inverclyde Music Festival.

Gerry Maguire, the popular former head teacher of All Saints Primary, and his wife Kathleen, the former head at St Michael’s, have come out of retirement to volunteer.

The pair, who are pictured congratulating Scottish Country Dancing champions Leah Taggart and Logan Moore, say they were keen to give something back to the festival.

Gerry told the Tele: “It’s nice to see the festival from the other side because both of us have been involved with it through most of our teaching career.

“We enjoyed entering year after year with the schools, so we thought it would be nice to give something back.” Kathleen says Isabel Lind, the festival president, encouraged them to help out.

She said: “Isabel has been a great friend all throughout our teaching careers so when she invited us to join the committee we couldn’t say no.

“It has been lovely to see some of our former pupils.

“The standard has been really high.” Little Logan and Leah were examples of that exceptionally high standard, after their team from Ardgowan Primary walked away with the Scottish Country Dancing title for the primary four/five section.

Eight-year-old Logan, whose proud granddad Alan came along to watch, said: “I was nervous before we danced but I felt okay when we started.” Leah, who also enjoys freestyle disco, tap, ballet and Highland dancing, worked hard on the routine and said she enjoyed performing alongside her cousin Dylan.

She said: “I’m really happy.

“I practised in the house with my mum, wee cousins and brother.” See today's Tele for four pages of results and pictures from the Inverclyde Music Festival.
