Large traffic tailbacks built up on the A8 near the Langbank roundabout following the pile up.
An eyewitness told how cars were ‘strewn like confetti’ at the scene of the accident, which happened on the eastbound carriageway of the M8 near Glasgow Airport.
The man — who was travelling to work in Greenock — told the Telegraph: “I saw one car facing the wrong way after it had come to rest in the crash barrier.
“Large transporters appeared to be taking some cars away and there was a large police presence.” The M8 was closed eastbound at junction 31 to 30, just after West Ferry, as a result of the smash.
A divertion was put in place at Langbank to ease the rush hour congestion before the road later reopened.
