The late Scotsport anchor and famous Morton fan, below, will live long in the memory of football supporters after decades fronting the STV programme and an impressive career in sports journalism.

But now local MSP Stuart McMillan has called for a permanent tribute to Arthur by having a street carry his name.

The former Greenock Academy pupil and honorary Morton vice-president sadly passed away aged 85 in November.

MSP Mr McMillan, pictured, now believes there is no better way to honour the broadcasting legend than to name a street after him in his hometown.

Mr McMillan, who is also a Morton fan, said: “Arthur Montford was a national icon who will never be forgotten.

“He had a very unique style of commentary, which ensured that even the most boring football match sounded interesting.

“However, despite his national fame, he never forgot his roots in Greenock and was proud of his beloved Morton.

“I think it is important that Greenock honours Arthur and ensures his memory lives forever in the area he grew up in.

“I can think of no better way to do this than to name a street in the town after him.” The former Tele reporter became a household name after presenting an astonishing 2,000-plus episodes of Scotsport from the late 1950s onwards. His unique commentary style and catchphrases such as ‘stramash’ and ‘disaster for Scotland’ — became synonymous with fans’ football terminology.

He was also Morton’s most famous fan — a life-long fan who was also made a director.

Mr McMillan has now written to all local housing associations asking them to support his call and consider the idea when naming any new Greenock developments.

He added: “Several local housing associations currently have plans for redevelopments in Greenock, and rather than the upheaval of renaming any current streets, I think it would be best to name a new street in one of these after Arthur.

“I have therefore written to the housing associations in question, and Inverclyde Council, asking them to support my call and honour one of Greenock’s most famous sons.

“I think most will agree, Arthur Montford Drive, does have a nice sound to it.”
