Public order officers were drafted in to deal with an incident in Murdieston Street and they sealed off the area.
At least 10 police vehicles and an ambulance attended at the scene.
It is understood one woman was involved in the incident, which started at around 4.45pm.
An eyewitness said items had been thrown down on to the street from a tenement window.
It’s believed there were also reports that the woman had an axe within the property, sparking a high-profile response from specialist officers. A tenement window above a laundrette shop at the scene was smashed during the disturbance.
Some officers on the street were carrying riot shields while others set up and maintained a cordon as members of the public watched from distance. The lower parts of Murdieston Street and Brachelston Street were shut off and traffic was diverted away from the area. The stand-off continued until around 7pm.
The woman was eventually detained by police, who said that their inquiries into the incident were continuing.
