A BLIND pensioner has been left fearing that she will take a tumble on a street because a dangerous dent in the pavement has not been fixed.

Betty Stirling, 84, walks along the stretch in Old Inverkip Road every day with her guide dog Dusty and is calling for the surface to be urgently repaired.

She has raised the issue with Cowdenknowes Residents’ Association in a bid to have action taken.

She said: “It’s been there for ages.

“The pavement from Old Inverkip Road to the prison and down to the park is rubbish.

“My concern is that I’ll fall and also that the dog will always take me into the middle of the pavement, so he is going out on the road to get round it.” The secretary of the residents’ association, Ivy Siegfried, says she has taken the matter up with Inverclyde Council.

She said: “I was told that it is on their list to get fixed.

“I reported it several times — it’s been like that for a year.

“It’s a safety issue, someone could fall or hurt themselves.

“There are mums pushing prams who have to go onto the road to get by.” Christine Brindley, another member of the residents’ association, added: “I live in Thom Street and I walk up this street every day. Someone in a wheelchair could tip over.” Council officials say they have inspected the pavement, taken steps to address the issue and will now investigate what has caused the surface to become uneven.

A spokesman said: “We have been made aware of the problem and have made the area safe while we investigate what has caused it.
