A CHARITY which provides a lifeline transport service has received a funding boost.
The Port Glasgow Voluntary Trans-Port Group has been awarded a £10,000 cheque from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT).
Speaking to the Telegraph, the group said the money will allow them to provide transport for about 350 pensioners and disabled people each week.
Pearl Simpson, who is the treasurer of the group, said: “It’s great to receive this money.
“We found out about the SPT funding through the Inverclyde Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP). This money will help us with the running costs which are high as insurance is expensive, while fuel and repairs are costly.
“We also try to save up money for replacement buses so the money will also go towards that.”
Councillor David Wilson, who is Inverclyde’s representative on the SPT board and chairman of the chair of SPT’s audit and standards committee, says the group provides a ‘tremendous’ service.
He added: “I’m delighted that SPT have donated the money as the Port Glasgow Voluntary Trans-Port Group does a tremendous job.”
Anyone who would like to volunteer as a driver, escort or provide support in any other way, should phone 743150.
