A NEW Inverclyde child protection website is in safe hands thanks to a group of a young people from Port Glasgow.

Youngsters from St John’s Primary have been busy over the past year designing an online page where children from across the district can go for help and advice about a range of issues.

They came up with an extraterrestrial theme and developed the idea into a new webpage.

It features two characters, Mars and Luna, who confide in each other about problems they are facing.

The site — safekidsininverclyde.co.uk — points youngsters to a page featuring a selection of planets, each of which contains information about how they can seek help for issues faced at school, home, online or while out playing.

The boys and girls also lent their voices to the animated aliens.

Lucas Allan, who is nine, said: “I enjoyed making the characters.

“I think the website is really good.”

A 10-strong group of pupils worked on the project with St John’s learning assistant Jan Johnston, Fiona Corvan from the council’s youth services department and web developers BBD Creative in Ayrshire.

They launched the website in front of an audience including education bosses and Inverclyde police chief inspector Alison Kennedy.

Mark Coyle, St John’s head teacher, said: “The children have been fantastic in terms of their ideas, brainstorming and pulling together as a team and working with partners.

“They are the stars of the show.”
