PORT pensioners are proving it’s never too late to learn to chill out.
Members of the Old Men’s Club, ranging in age from late 60s to 84, have been practising Tai Chi.
They been attending classes at the club for several weeks and embraced the Chinese martial art.
Instructor James Watson said: “The group has been fantastic, their balance is improving and they’re more confident “Tai chi’s good for any age group, but its predominately older people who come to my classes.
“It’s good for hand to eye co-ordination, balance and flexibility, weight loss, aches and pains, ME, arthritis, Parkinson’s and fibromyalgia.” “It helps a whole host of other things too, such as anxiety and depression.” James’ students are already feeling the health benefits of the course.
John Cairey, 68, said: “I’ve got Parkinson’s and it helps me with my movement.” Pat Duffy, 84, said: “I think any kind of exercise is good for you and we’ve got a good coach.” Bill Knox, 80, added: “I like doing Tai chi — it loosens up my joints.” The sessions were set up after a grant was put in place.
Club president Eddie Gilmartin explained: “We applied for a grant and received almost £1,000 to run the classes.
“We’re all over the moon about it — this has inspired us to do other things.
“We’re also running a painting class in September and would like to have a day out on the Waverley or go rambling.” New members are very welcome to join the Old Men’s Club.
