HANDS up all those who are looking forward to tackling the grass every other week and trimming the hedges?

Mmmm, not a great deal of enthusiasm out there. Can’t imagine why.

However, there are remarkable characters who not only love the humdrum aspects of gardening, but go the whole hog and actually cultivate things instead of just cutting them.

And in Inverclyde we could have a growing number of such green-fingered individuals because of a splendid scheme involving the 32nd Greenock and District Scout Group and Wellington Allotment Gardens Association.

Everyone who shops at Tesco in the west of Scotland is getting the chance to boost Wellington’s Raising Young Growers initiative by voting for it in the store’s innovative Bags of Help initiative.

You have until the end of April to ask at the checkout for a Bags of Help token, and then pop it into the appropriate section of the glass-fronted box near the entrance.

Wellington is up against two other projects from outside of Inverclyde for the valuable cash, so it’s a no-brainer as to which one we should all support.

The association and Scouts get great pleasure out of working together.

More than a hundred youngsters are there twice a year to assist in a variety of tasks and grow their own food and flowers.

And the hope is that they will carry on with their horticultural activities for the rest of their lives — and put people like me to shame!
