LOTS of people will be interested in the enterprising proposal for an exciting mountain bike trail at Rankin Park in Greenock.

Such daring types will be inspired by the current Friday night series on Channel 5 starring former Welsh rugby international Richard Parks, who has overcome a serious injury to become his country’s top extreme adventurer.

Episode one followed the courageous 37-year-old on the Yak Attack, a ‘hard-core’ mountain bike race through the Nepalese Himalayas described as the highest on the planet, not to mention the most arduous.

It was part of his preparation for becoming the fastest-ever British person to ski solo and unsupported from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole.

Yak Attack’s outrageously exhilarating conditions are just that wee bit more difficult than anyone will find at Rankin Park, but you have to start somewhere and there’s no telling where the local facility would eventually lead to for enthusiasts.

The council say it would be ideal for a combination of mountain bike skills trail, a short cross country route and something called a ‘pump track’.

It sounds a great deal safer than the decidedly dodgy conditions Richard endured — extreme temperatures ranging from horrendously hot to frighteningly frigid, strength-sapping altitudes of 5,416 metres above sea level and nerve-shreddingly narrow, edge-of-mountain tracks that were definitely diabolical for anyone scared of heights.

Let’s hope Rankin Park goes ahead and becomes a Scottish magnet for mountain biking.
