INVERCLYDE was bracing itself today for one of the highest tides of the year. Ferries and road traffic were likely to be disrupted, and the council's emergency planning officer warned the public to be wary of objects which may have been loosened in Monday's storms - such as chimneys or roof tiles. Police traffic inspector John Malcolm said there was a risk of serious traffic disruption along the Clyde Coast, and that people should travel only if absolutely necessary.

LITHGOWS Limited are going all out to win their biggest shipbuilding contract - a £17 million order for 11 vessels with which the Argentine Government is to re-equip its merchant fleet. The Port Glasgow firm's design experts and estimating departments are hard at work.
ELDER and Fyffes cargo steamer Sinaloa is at the James Watt Dock discharging a cargo of 130,000 tons of bananas.

THE arrivals during the last 24 hours have been rather more numerous, but only four vessels have come in.
SINCE the departure of Rev Roderick McLeod to Lewis, the five Gaelic congregation in Jamaica Street have been without a minister. The vacancy has now been filled by the election of Rev Kenneth Smith of Rothesay, and his ordination and induction took place last night in the church. There was a good attendance.
