I RECENTLY came across this interesting photographic record of the Lower Clyde’s maritime heritage.

It shows the Cartsdyke yard of Ross & Marshall.

The business dated to 1872 and I understand the picture was taken in the 1890s.

The accompanying advertisement is from the Greenock Directory of 1957, published by David Haughey Ltd. As it states, Ross and Marshall were shipowners, stevedores and coal merchants.

The firm supplied coal and fresh water to shipping.

Over the years the company’s fleet included puffers and small coasters.

Almost all of its vessels had names ending in ‘light’, such as Dawnlight, Polarlight, Raylight and Starlight.

The 1957 Greenock Directory contained details of another two Greenock shipowners — P MacCallum & Sons and Alex McNeil & Son.

The former’s shipowning department was in Cathcart Street and the company’s steel stockholding operation was located at 148 Rue End Street.

McNeil’s owned puffers used in association with its sand and gravel business.

Its head office and garage was at 204 Dalrymple Street and its depot was at the Albert Harbour.
