MORTON have applied for planning permission to redevelop the Wee Dublin End of their Cappielow home.

The club have asked planners for the green light to put up a canopy over the existing terrace, which traditionally houses away fans behind the goal, pictured.

The work is expected to cost about £150,000 to carry out.

The roof was bought from Ton's Renfrewshire rivals St Mirren for around £50,000 when they left their Love Street stadium and sold parts of it off.

Detailed designs - submitted by local architects Richard Robb - show that a new foundation slab, designed by structural engineers, will be put in place at the top of the current Wee Dublin terrace to support the canopy.

The plans also include room for a concourse, catering area and toilet facilities at the back of the seating rows, with a space set aside for wheelchair-bound fans at the front of the new stand.

Planning officers from Inverclyde Council are currently running the rule over Morton's application, which was submitted at the end of May.

If the go-ahead is given for the project, it would take Morton a big step closer towards having an SPL-compliant stadium.

The stand would have around 20 rows of bucket-style seats and could hold in the region of 3,000 fans.

Morton upgraded their floodlights to SPL standard last season, after installing two towers also purchased from St Mirren when they moved to their new stadium.
