NEWLY-formed Clydeview Academy have burst onto the Scottish school athletics scene.

The Gourock school scooped two gold medals and a bronze at the national indoor track and field championships at the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, on Thursday 9 February.

This was the first time the school has participated at the National Championships and the pupils competing established Clydeview Academy as a name to be reckoned with in athletics.

First medallist was Evie Semple who ran confidently through the heats and semi-finals of the under-16 girls 300m.

Qualifying second fastest for the final, Evie started well and pushed herself to the front at the lane break where she took the lead and ensured the gold medal in a time of 43.3 seconds Next on track was Sarah Glenny who had dominated the heats and semi-final to qualify fastest in the over-16s 300m final. Having watched and supported Evie take gold in the junior event, Sarah started her own event well and determined to make it a double gold for Clydeview Academy hit the front of the field at the second last bend before powering on at the lane break to secure gold in a time of 41.86 seconds.

Head teacher was watching on as both Evie and Sarah ran exceptional races with their tactics and race plans executed as per their pre-race planning earlier in the warm-up area.

Evie and Sarah had encouraged and supported each other and made a pact with coach Emma Steele to both win gold. The outcome being a unique achievement for Clydeview Academy and the local area, with Evie and Sarah securing both the junior and senior Schools Championship for the 300m event.

In the over-16s boys 800m event, Clydeview pupil Greg Williams won the bronze medal in what was a exceptionally strong field. In a close and tactical finish, Greg managed to get the better of his Gleniffer High opponent in the fight for bronze and crossed the line in 1 minute 59 seconds.

In the under-16s boys 800m, Jonathan Glen, of Clydeview Academy, secured a personal best of 2 minutes 12 seconds while Sean Toner, of Clydeview Academy, qualified for the over-16s boys final in the 200m having earlier just missed out in the final of the 60m.

Ewan Wong, of Clydeview Academy, ran well in the over-16s boys 60m and 200m with times of 7.71 and 26.0 seconds.

Earlier in the day, Notre Dame High pupil Josh Houston won the bronze medal in the under-16s boys 1500m with a time of 4 minutes 30 seconds.
