MORTON will tonight learn their group for the revamped League Cup — but already know Rangers and rivals St Mirren will not be among their opponents due to the seeding process.

The first stage of the competition will see the country divided into two regionalised sections - north and south - with each comprising four groups of five clubs.

Ton have been listed as second-level seeds in the south section of the draw alongside the Ibrox outfit, the Saints and Queen of the South.

Each group will be made up of one top-level seed, one second-level seed and three unseeded clubs.

The south section pots are as follows: First seeds: Motherwell, Partick Thistle, Hamilton Accies, Kilmarnock.

Second seeds: Rangers, Morton, St Mirren, Queen of the South.
Unseeded: Ayr United, Livingston, Stranraer, Airdrie, Albion Rovers, Stenhousemuir, Queen’s Park, Clyde, Annan Athletic, Berwick Rangers, Edinburgh City, East Stirling.

The draw for the Betfred-sponsored tournament will be shown live on BT Sport Europe at 7.30pm tonight and conducted by pundits Chris Sutton and Michael Stewart.

BT will also screen six of the group games, with fixture dates and television selections to be announced next week.

In each of the eight groups, five clubs will play each other once in a round robin format and ties have been pencilled in for 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30 July.

Although three points will be awarded for a victory and one point for a draw as normal, the SPFL have introduced an innovation in which teams can earn a bonus point.

All drawn matches will go straight to a penalty shootout, the winners of which will receive that extra point.

The eight group winners and four best runners-up then progress to the second round, whereupon the competition reverts to the traditional knock-out format.
