GARY Oliver sees himself as a striker – but insists he is ready to play anywhere across the frontline for Morton.

The 20-year-old came through the Hearts youth ranks as a forward but was also deployed on both flanks during a loan spell at Stenhousemuir and a season at Queen of the South.

And he reckons that attacking versatility could prove a valuable asset to Ton boss Jim Duffy following the departures of Bobby Barr, Paul McMullan and Stefan McCluskey.

Oliver told the Tele: “When I was with Hearts I was always a striker, an out-and-out striker, and maybe the No.10 position at times.

“But I learned a lot at Queen of the South because they played me out wide. I wasn’t too keen on it to start with but I got to like it.

“My favourite position is as a striker and I think that’s where I’m most effective, but I can play in a lot of positions.

“The gaffer came up to the house, sat down and spoke to me and my dad and said he could play me wide, as a striker or as a No.10 — wherever he thinks best depending on who we’re playing and his tactics.

“It’s good for him to have different options where he can play me and it gives me a better chance to get in the team as well.”
