DEREK Gaston has warned his Morton team-mates not to take Beith Juniors lightly — or risk suffering a similar fate as he did back in 2012.

Gaston was part of the Ton side four years ago who hobbled to a replay against Turriff United in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup, thanks to a Peter Weatherson strike.

The keeper was also on the bench back in 2014 when Ton succumbed to defeat at the hands of minnows Spartans in the same competition.

So Gaston wants to make sure his team-mates know what they’re in for if they consider Beith easy pickings.

He told the Tele: “I’ve been here a number of years now and been on the end of a few shock results.

“In my first season at Morton, we went up to Turriff and drew 1-1. That was four seasons ago.

“I think we eventually won the replay 6-0, but we went there for the first game and it was a horrible tie. Horrible weather, bad conditions.

“As well as that, I’ve obviously been part of a team that was beaten by Spartans a few years ago, so I’ve seen how easy it is for cup shocks.

“I think teams can have off days and other teams can perform above their level, so you can’t take anything for granted.

“You’ve seen it this season where we’ve played against teams who might have had better players than we have here, and we’ve played well and managed to get a result.

“Over the course of the season you’ll have teams who are obviously better than others, but in a one-off game anything can happen.

“Look at the other results from last weekend. Dumbarton for instance by all accounts had their goalkeeper to thank for getting a draw against a junior team.

“Dunfermline from our league as well played a Highland League team and were only 4-3 up in the 93rd minute when they managed to score again to make things look a wee bit better.

“So we won’t be taking this team lightly.”

Gaston admits that Ton would have preferred the game had gone ahead last weekend when it was originally scheduled.

He said: “We’d have liked to have had the game on. Obviously we’re on a good run of form and we’d rather have played at the weekend.

"Sometimes you do welcome the break, but this wasn’t one of those times.

“The annoying thing is, when games get called off that you’ve been preparing for all week, seems kind of a waste.”
