FORMER Morton favourite Andy McLaren says there’s no reason why the club can’t repeat their League Cup exploits and book a return trip to Hampden.

McLaren knows what it takes to win the Scottish Cup, as he was part of Ivan Golac’s Dundee United side who defeated Rangers 1-0 in the 1994 final.

While he feels that a trophy win for Ton is unlikely, he believes they can make the latter stages of the competition if they get past Falkirk today.

McLaren, who was at Ton from 2005-06, said: “You do need the luck of the draw.

“Morton, if they can get through on Saturday, will be looking for home draws all the way to the semi-finals.

“If they can manage that — and they’ve already been to a semi-final this season — who is to say they can’t get another one.”

McLaren insists no side will want to visit the Greenock men in knock-out competition, due to their impressive near year-long unbeaten run at Cappielow.

And the 43-year-old is happy that Ton are back on an upward curve — because it means they are finally fulfilling the potential he saw in them when he was a player.

He said: “The big cups are set up to favour the Premiership clubs but there aren’t many who will fancy going to Cappielow for a cup-tie.

“Morton are good enough.

“I always thought they would get to that stage that they probably always should have been — like a Falkirk, and the level they’re at.

“Morton should be at that level.

“They always have had a good fanbase and have been well supported.

“When I was there and we would go to places like Arbroath, there were over 1,000 fans going up.

“For the division we were in at the time, that’s unbelievable.”
