THOMAS O’Ware believes this weekend’s league fixture against Ayr United at Somerset Park gives Morton a chance to ‘put things right’ after not performing well enough against the Ayrshire side in previous clashes.

O’Ware has been disappointed with Ton’s showings against United in recent seasons, and even claims that the WIN over Ian McCall’s outfit at Cappielow earlier this campaign wasn’t good
enough.

But he insists that Saturday’s game gives his side the chance to show how much they’ve improved since their last visit to Somerset Park — and prove that they’ve come a long way in a short space of time.

He told the Tele: “We didn’t have the best start in the league this season when we didn’t win any of our first five games.

“Where we are now after that start is a massive achievement. We’ve only been beaten by Dunfermline since, and that was an off-day where everything that could go wrong did.

“So it shows great character and spirit from the boys that we could immediately get back to the way we were playing before that game after it, and we’ve continued that.

“Saturday is going to be a massive match because we’ve not really done well enough against Ayr United when we’ve played them down there in the last two seasons.

“That’s something that we’re looking to put right.

“When we played them, even at home, we didn’t perform to our best. I wouldn’t say we got away with one, but going down in the first half and managing to turn it around in the second — we don’t know when we’re beaten.”

O’Ware was proud of his defensive partners during Saturday’s Scottish Cup fourth round tie against Falkirk and was delighted with another clean sheet against the Bairns, because it shows that he and Lee Kilday have a solid partnership in Morton’s defence.

He said: “I think when Gavin Gunning left people thought he’ll be a big loss, which I’m sure he will.

“But Lee has come in and we have been very good together — apart from one wee mistake against Falkirk on Saturday.

“The last few weeks we’ve been pretty solid together so another clean sheet is brilliant for us. Gats [Derek Gaston] did well too with a few good saves, so I think the whole team are doing well with the confidence at the moment and we’re getting the wee breaks that we weren’t getting in the first five or six games of the season.”

O’Ware made the William Hill Scottish Cup team of the fourth round after his solid performance, but the Ton vice captain admits he doesn’t read too much into these things.

But he is looking ahead to the next round of the cup, where Ton were handed a tricky tie away to Ibrox to face Rangers.

Yet while O’Ware is excited about facing Mark Warburton’s men, he’s clear that Ton will be completely focused on their league campaign until then.

He said: “I don’t look too much into being part of team of the round, I think sometimes I actually play better than I did on Saturday. It’s not something I’ll look too much into but it is obviously nice to be involved in it.

“But being drawn against Rangers is a massive occasion for the club, a good occasion as well for the chairman and the board. It’s a day that we’ll be looking forward to.

“When it does come around we won’t change anything and will try to work to be at our best to compete with Rangers. But we’ve got a lot of big games before then and the boys will be focused on these important league games.”
