MORTON manager Ray McKinnon says he will assess the injury of on-loan defender Kerr Waddell.

The defender was left out of the squad on Tuesday night against Partick Thistle after aggravating an ankle injury.

The centre-back was subbed after 61 minutes against Ayr United on Saturday and McKinnon says it was merely precautionary, as he didn’t want to risk worsening the Dundee loanee’s injury.

He told the Tele: “Kerr twisted his ankle on the second day of training on the astroturf.

“He’s played with ankle injuries and we just need to take care of him.

“It’s a long season so we need to be careful not to make it worse.”

Morton’s passing at times in the second half on Tuesday was a look into how McKinnon’s side will want to play.

After only assembling most of his squad within the last month, he is hoping the more time his side can get to gel, the more they will begin to reap the rewards.

He added: “You need all the ingredients to do that and play the way we did in the second half.

“We had some fantastic width on the right-hand side with Reghan Tumilty and Charlie Telfer was able to come in, we were able to keep popping it over because we had that width.

“If he hadn’t been playing on Tuesday we probably wouldn’t be able to do that. It takes the building blocks to do that, but I’m really pleased so far.”
