MORTON development squad boss John Sutton says he can’t wait to get the season started after the Reserve League fixtures were announced.

The Ton have been placed in the top tier of the new-look competition, which replaces the previous under-20s system.

Morton begin the Reserve League away to Falkirk next month on Monday August 20 before hosting Hibernian at Cappielow the following week.

While the Ton reserve side have played pre-season friendlies, including a 2-1 defeat to Largs Thistle last Friday, pictured, Sutton believes nothing can beat getting back to the competitive fixtures.

He told the Tele: “The players have been doing well. We’ve played some good teams and I never really enjoyed pre-season games as they didn’t count for anything.

“The boys have been doing well and I think it does make a difference playing in competitive games and it’s the thing you really look forward to as a player.

“The attitude is good and there’s some really good ability amongst the group.

“Everyone is at different stages as well. There are boys who need to develop a little bit physically, there are boys who are maybe further ahead physically but haven’t played as much football and need to develop on that side of things, there are challenges for everyone.

“We’re just trying to give them the best chance they can and they’re certainly giving it at their end of the bargain.

“But we’re looking forward to the real games now and they can’t come soon enough for me.”
