North Berwick 39 Greenock Wanderers 36

WANDERERS came tantalisingly close to their first win and were only denied by a penalty converted with the final act of the match.

The home side started very quickly and took the lead after five minutes when their prop barged over the line 7 - 0. Wanderers responded with a Frizzell penalty 7 - 3.

The visitors started to make an impression and winger Galbraith, in the act of scoring under pressure, put a foot in touch to be denied the points.

Play was moving from end to end with chances for both sides, it was the home team who finally got on the scoreboard again through the forwards 14 - 3.

Wanderers' defence was proving difficult to breach as the home side took the upper hand in attack, particularly their backs with their stand-off proving to be a handful.

Tyley was yellow carded for obstruction, reducing the visitors to 14 men.

Wanderers, however, during a spell of authority scored through Robb to make it 14 - 10 at half-time.

The home side after the break and the advantage of the slope were quickly into their stride and scored through the forwards 19 -10 and again five minutes later through their stand-off who waltzed through poor Wanderers tackling 26 - 10.

Two further tries for the home side, both through their forwards, gave them a commanding lead 36 - 10 after 28 minutes of the half.

A big home score was looking very likely but Wanderers fought back with a try by winger Galbraith 36 - 15.

Wanderers were now playing with belief and a further try was scored by forward Hopkins 36 - 22. An interception by Tyley in his own half allowed  him to sprint to the line under the posts 36 - 29.

And in the pursuit of a win Wanderers scored a further try to set up an exciting last five minutes, 36 - 36.

They were caught offside and the home kicker converted on the final whistle. A hard one to take but Wanderers yet again showed considerable improvement.
