GREENOCK Wanderers 1st XV planned trip to Perth at the weekend had to be cancelled and the match postponed due to the general havoc caused by Storm Babet.

However, in front of a decent crowd at Fort Matilda rugby fans were entertained to a very good game served up by the 2nd XV and Dalziel.

The first score came in the 15th minute, and it was well worth the wait. Wanderers' fullback Ross Kelly fielded the ball in his own half and made a dazzling run through the visitors defence to score under the posts for a try which was promptly converted for the home side to take a 7-0 lead.

There were some good individual moments from Wanderers' forwards with Strachan, Murray, and Dylan Campbell in particular ghosting about the pitch.

And Knox, Boag and Baxter in the backs were having a fine game as well.

Wanderers' good play was further rewarded when they extended their lead to 14-0 with another further try by Jack Dale in the 28th minute after a fine solo run to score.

Early in the second half Wanderers Fabio Marturano picked up a loose pass from the visitors and ran from his own half to score and bring the score up to 19-0 .

Then it was the forwards' turn to score through David Strachan, who barged over from close range to make it 24-0.

Greenock Telegraph:

Wanderers were playing some very good rugby and were well on top when a rare foray into their half by Dalziel resulted in a try for the away side, making the score 24-5.

But Wanderers were far from done and responded in fine style with 2 late tries through the forwards Forrester and Currie.

It was a fine afternoon's entertainment and a good win for the 2nd XV, some of whom will have caught the eyes of the 1st XV coaches watching.

Wanderers Women played Oban in the league on Sunday and recorded a fine and convincing win 52-31.
