STEPHEN Trainer was a runaway winner in Greenock Glenpark Harriers’ first race of 2015.

In perfect weather for racing, he coasted around four laps of the Coves reservoirs to set a new course record to easily win the Harris trophy. Behind him it was a battle of the vets, with only 30 seconds separating Steven Campbell, Paul Monaghan and Andrew White.

Steven eventually pulled clear to come out on top.

Rhonda White continued her run of good form. Yet again she set a personal best to win the ladies’ race ahead of Lorna Coyle and Marian Monk.

The win puts her into the lead in the club championship for the first time this season.

In a very close handicap competition Paul Beaton claimed the Russell trophy by just a few seconds from Silke Loehndorf.

With the juniors and seniors starting together but doing a different number of laps, this is one of the few chances where the youngsters get the chance to put one over their older club-mates, and they certainly took the opportunity, leaving many trailing behind them.

Over one lap a fit-again Harry McGill was first back ahead of the improving Alan Mollins and Ryan Brown, with Zoe Renfrew clear in the girls’ race.

Thanks to race sponsors WB Smith Trees and Turf Ltd of Kilbarchan, and to all the volunteers who helped with the successful event.

In Glasgow on the same day at the indoor meeting at the Emirates Stadium, Shaun Lyon ran his first personal best on the track for two years with an excellent 9.10 minutes for 3,000 metres, while veteran David Tamburini was well clear in his heat, running an even-paced race to win in 9.43 minutes.
