GREENOCK cricketer Alex Baum is back in action today hoping to end a run of three losses following another under-19 World Cup defeat yesterday.

Baum was part of the Scotland side that lost by seven wickets to the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi in the Plate quarter-final match to decide ninth-place.

Glenparker Baum was adjudged LBW, only scoring two runs from 10 balls.

He will now try to help his side get back to winning ways against Papua New Guinea today in the first Plate play-off match.

The Scots have already beaten their opponents — a six-wicket win in their opening match of the tournament in the group stages. But the players have been unable to pick up another victory since then having lost to India, Pakistan and the UAE.

Under-19s coach Craig Wright, a former Greenock captain, said: “It was a very disappointing performance.

“It was a bad toss to lose on a well grassed wicket, but we are capable of much more with the bat than we have shown today and in recent games.

“The challenge now is for the players to pick themselves up and show some character to ensure we give ourselves a chance of finishing the tournament with two strong performances in our remaining matches.”
