CAUTIOUS Morton midfielder Cameron Blues believes his side would do well to focus on reaching Championship safety first before targeting a place in the top four.

Blues thinks that there is a need for Ton to get back to basics and ensure they will be guaranteed second tier football next season before looking at a promotion play-off bid.

Players and managers in the Championship often talk about the ‘magic’ 40 point mark that usually means that teams will avoid the drop - a tally Blues’ side sit just short of after collecting just one from the last 15.

Blues told the Tele:  “I think the contrasting runs that we’ve been on this season show the nature of the league, and now we’re needing it to flip back into our favour.

“We need to try and get that win that would take us to 40 points, and hopefully we can then go from there.

“If we can get that win, you hope that it can be the start of a mini unbeaten run in the last seven games.

“The good thing for us is that we need to play most teams one more time, so it’s still there for us if we want it.

“But we just need to get that first win, secure safety and then take it a game at a time from there.”
