MORTON’S man of the moment Jack Bearne hopes that he’s done enough to impress gaffer Dougie Imrie after marking his first start in almost three months with a man of the match performance.

Bearne ran the Queen’s Park backline ragged for most of Saturday afternoon as the former Liverpool youngster helped Imrie’s men record their first win since the end of February.

He came close to notching the opening goal and later won the free kick that set up Robbie Muirhead’s sixteenth strike of the season.

Now the 22-year-old wants to build momentum and nail down a regular place in the side.

He told the Tele: “I’m really pleased with how I played. I’ve had to be patient, that was my first start since December.

“The team was on a great run for most of that time in fairness, so there wasn’t a lot I could do about it. It’s always hard to break into a team that’s done well, so I had to be patient and wait.

“But I’ve been eager to play for a while, and thankfully I got my chance today. Hopefully I’ve been able to impress off the back of contributing to helping the team go and get what could be a huge three points.

“It’s hard to be patient, no matter what you do in life. Hopefully I’ve managed to convince the manager and the fans that I’m worthy of starting games.

“I’ve had to bide my time, but I’m really happy with the performance that I put in."

Bearne believes Ton can take great heart from their show against The Spiders, who had been in good form until the weekend.

He said: “Queen’s Park are really good, a young side who’ve got a manager who gets them playing good football.

“They’ve had a decent run of results before playing us last weekend too, but we knew as a team that we needed a response of our own.

“We always knew we were capable of getting back winning games again, so we’re pleased to have done it.”

As the season builds towards it climax Bearne is adamant that everything is still to play for in the chase for the final play-off place.

He said: “It’s a strange league. You’ve got the top two who’ve kind of ran away with it a bit. But there’s a lot of good teams fighting for places beneath them, with hardly any points between them.

“It’s crucial now at this time of the season to get points on the board.

“You’re always looking over your shoulder at other teams and their results but you need to focus on your next game, so that’s what we’ll do now.”
