MORTON boss Dougie Imrie believes his side earned a great point on the road – even if he was left disappointed at the manner of how his side were pegged back by Ayr United.

The Ton boss says he’d have taken a point ahead of the game as his side held on at the end of what turned into a battling second half performance.

Imrie believes that the game that ensued was as a result of what’s on the line at this stage of the season.

He told the Tele: “I think at any time of the season to come away from home and get a point, it’s a good point.

“Ayr United are a good team. I think most of the teams in the league are evenly matched, but there is a feeling of disappointment there.

“We were 1-0 up late into the first half, it was a great ball in from Michael Garrity, a great header from Kirk and we were on top.

“But I say the same thing every week, show them down the line and don’t let them put the ball into the box.

“We allowed them to whip in a great ball and it’s a great header from Dowds.

“I didn’t think it was a great second half, Ayr as the home team were always going to come at us.

“But I don’t think they caused us any problems, boys were putting their bodies on the line to stop the ball going into the back of the net.

“I appreciate that it wasn’t a great game, there was a lot of long balls. But that’s part and parcel of games at the tail end of the season.

“Boys are nervous and don’t want to make mistakes and I’ll never criticise this group because they’ve given the club everything this season.”

Imrie revealed that there are is a sense of mutual frustration between the group after how the last few weeks have played out.

He believes that’s because of the desire to reach those play-off spots that now may elude them.

The manager added: “They’ve been through a lot. I know people are frustrated. I’m frustrated, the staff and the players are too.

“We all want to try and get to the play-offs but the teams who are in there will deserve to be there because they’ve been the most consistent over the course of the season.

“We wanted to come here and win, but we’ll take a great point on the road and move on to another tough game on Friday.”
