DEJECTED Morton boss Dougie Imrie has indicated that his side's heavy home defeat to Dundee United could lead to changes at the club ahead of next season.

The manager couldn't hide his disappointment after Jim Goodwin's side swept to a comfortable 4-1 win at Cappielow on Friday evening as they close in on promotion back to the top flight.

The result continued Ton's dramatic form slump which has seen them fall out of the promotion play-off race and slip down the Championship table.

They were in defensive disarray throughout as they gifted the champions-elect four easy goals.

While the Ton boss felt his team's recent heavy fixture schedule played a part in the loss he also hinted that it could spark a shake-up this summer.

Imrie, speaking to Ton TV, said: "It's probably the lowest I've felt in the time that I've been here.

"The defending's not good enough, but I understand Tuesday night took a lot out of the players.

"To play another three games in six days is a tough ask.

"In the main, I can really feel the fans' frustration and rightly so, it wasn't good enough and I take full responsibility."

Imrie felt his side had started the game reasonably well before cutting their own throat, but he also highlighted a controversial decision which denied his side a penalty early in the second-half, when Jai Quitongo looked to have been fouled in the box.

He said: "We had chances in the game.

"I think the penalty [claim] is the big turning point.

"I know it's 3-0, but if that goes in you can maybe go nick another one and it gets nervous for Dundee United.

"Then they go up the park and it's 4-0."

The Ton boss slammed his side's shoddy defending, describing all of the goals they conceded as avoidable.

He revealed that centre back Jack Baird had apologised for the individual mistake which led to United's third strike.

The Ton boss said: "The way we lost the goals was really poor.

"First one we don't pick up.

"The second was calamitous, pinball in the box and Middleton gets his shot way.

"The third one is even worse, a player of Louis Moult's stature just standing at the back post for a tap-in.

"The fourth one, Bairdy has held his hands up, which I respect, he's taken the blame for that.

"On the whole it's miles away from the team we normally see at Cappielow."

Imrie admitted he felt let down by the performance after the way Ton had contested their previous meetings against the league leaders this term.

But he added that the collapse meant he would have to start considering a summer revamp.

He said: "In the three games we have played them previously we have been well in the game, but tonight from start to finish we were nowhere near it.

"It has given me food for thought.

"We have got three tough games to go and come the summer I will have to look at a lot of things going forward pre-season for next season.

"We basically lay down and let Dundee United run over the top of us, which is hard to say but is the truth.

"To go and lose two goals in quick succession again [after half time] is just criminal and we gave ourselves an uphill task with being 4-0 down.

"This group have been through the mill, having to play three games in six days twice this season, not just once.

"At the moment we are not getting the breaks but we don't help ourselves, especially tonight with the goals we conceded.

"We lost poor, poor goals at critical times of the game."
