ROBERT Thomson has revealed that a conversation with Dumbarton manager Stevie Aitken convinced him to sign for Morton.
Thomson penned a pre-contract at Cappielow back in February after a heart-to-heart with ex-Morton midfielder Aitken who encouraged the forward to make the jump from part-time football at the Sons to full-time in Greenock.
While he signed the deal in the middle of a relegation battle with Dumbarton, Thomson admits his then-manager had no fears about whether or not the former Dundee United striker would continue to do the business on the pitch for Ton’s Clydeside rivals.
He told the Tele: “Stevie Aitken was brilliant with me and encouraged me to take the deal at Morton. He knew he wouldn’t have an issue with me putting in performances for Dumbarton, he knew the type of character I am that that wouldn’t ever have affected me.
“He was more than happy for me to sign for Morton. I spoke to him before I went to speak with Jim Duffy, just to let him know, and he was all for it.
“He encouraged me because he knew it was an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down.”
