MORTON boss Jim Duffy was pleased to hear glowing reports about young left-back Lewis Strapp's debut at Elgin City last weekend - and he hopes the 17-year-old can learn a lot during his spell at Borough Briggs.

Strapp earned a place in the SPFL Team of the Week after an impressive debut display in a 3-2 win for the Black and Whites and received rave reviews from manager Jim Weir as well as captain Jon-Paul McGovern and local journalists.

And Duffy was delighted with the youngster and hopes the Dunoon-born defender can gain plenty of knowledge and experience from his time on loan at Elgin.

He told the Tele: "Lewis has been part of our first team squad now for the best part of the last two seasons and he's still only 17.

"So if he can go and get some first team games under his belt at that age it's going to help him in the longer term rather than development games.

"It was a good start for him for Elgin. They were 2-0 down and scored in the last minute, that was Elgin's first win in a long time so that made the whole atmosphere at the club a good environment, which can help young players settle in.

"I'm sure there'll be mistakes along the way but he made a very promising start. He's been training with us all week and he's really enjoying the experience which is good.

"It's a long way from Dunoon to Elgin but that just shows the type of boy he is.

"To take that challenge on board, a lot of boys would've said 'that's not for me', but Lewis was typical Lewis, he wants to play and he was happy to go for it.

"I'm confident he'll do well over the next couple of months."
