MORTON legends are to be honoured with the creation of an official club Hall of Fame.

Greenock Morton Supporters’ Trust, in conjunction with Greenock Morton Community Trust, have announced that they are to set up a formal Greenock Morton Hall of Fame, with the first players to be inducted at a gala dinner in Greenock Town Hall on 15 November.

Nick Robinson, chairman of the supporters’ trust and community trust director, said “Many people have talked about holding such an event in the past but for one reason or another, it has never happened.

“Whilst supporting Morton has its ups and downs, there is no doubt that there many players worthy of recognition in this way and so the trust decided, with the blessing of the club, to do something about it!” Nick added: “During a lifetime supporting Morton, I have been blessed with seeing my club reach a cup final and semi finals, top the Premier League for a few weeks and even make a foray into Europe.

“I have seen many wonderful players who would grace any team. It is only right that we should honour them by admission to a formal Hall of Fame and steps will be taken to create a section within Cappielow where their feats are acknowledged.

“The proceeds of the event will go towards supporting youth development at Cappielow and there is a nice symmetry that funds raised honouring great players of the past should go towards helping develop stars of the future.” Ten players — Allan McGraw, Joe Caven, Erik Sorensen, Joe Harper, David Hayes, Andy Ritchie, Rowan Alexander, Derek McInnes, Derek Collins and Peter Weatherson — have been selected as the initial candidates for induction, primarily by Morton historian Niall McGilp. Three of these will be selected by a public vote conducted by the Telegraph and details of their respective playing careers will be published over the next three nights. Voting coupons will then be printed within our sports pages every day to allow readers to pick their top trio.

The Telegraph is also offering a prize of two seats at one of the top tables, sharing the night with famous stars such as Andy Ritchie and Allan McGraw. The winner will be drawn from those returning votes to us. Tickets for the dinner are priced at £45 each or £400 for a table of 10 and are currently on sale and can be purchased via the Community Trust Office at Cappielow on 529845 or via most Morton travel clubs.
