TWO more games this season (hopefully) for everyone connected with Greenock Morton and we will be crowned Scottish League Division One champions.

How good does that sound especially since only a few weeks ago we were talking about needing miracles and assistance from other teams in our league.

We now know that the title is in our own hands so let’s all give credit to everyone down Cappielow way for getting us back into this position and hopefully for finishing the job off.

We have all been critical of the players and management at times this season but make no mistake the priority this season was to get out of this league and if the staff at Morton provide this then we should all be proud of them. Some people will say as a full-time team we should have easily won this league but the players cannot influence this, so fair play to them so far.

Not for the first time this season, on Saturday we owed a huge amount of credit to Derek Gaston, who once again stood up and was counted when needed and I personally do not think we would be in this great position without his individual performances this season.

Earlier in the season I was thinking of Conor Pepper as player of the year, Thomas O’Ware also came into my thoughts and, of course, Declan McManus.

But for me it has to be Gaston this season and hopefully he will receive his award along with a League One winner’s medal.

John Gisbey, Greenock THIRTEEN years ago Douglas Rae waltzed into Cappielow worshipped by Morton fans as ‘the saviour’.

The vision back them was clear — a five-year plan to get Morton promoted to the top flight of Scottish football.

This was music to the ears of fans who had endured many ups and downs, predominantly downs, over the years and 12 months prior the thought of SPL football was the last thing on anyone’s mind as survival was all we had to hope for.

Fast forward 13 years and we are still in the same position we were, if not worse, than the day Mr Rae took over.

Gone are the days of the fans’ Q and A sessions and any sort of feel-good factor.

There are many questions I have for Mr Rae and I hope he reads this and provides some answers.

Why, for 13 years, has Mr Rae budgeted for 4,000-plus coming through the gates at Cappielow?

When was the last time Morton could boast such an average gate?

This is absolute mismanagement, poor business forecasting and a problem which should have been addressed 10 years ago.

Does Mr Rae accept responsibility for the lack of stability he has brought, the misuse of finances on average players which brought no return, the revolving door of managers which required financial settlement, the purchase of a stand which has seen more rust that the light of day?

If your heart belongs to Morton then put the club up for sale.

Leave the club in a secure financial footing and let someone with a proper vision take us to the next level.

NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED I WAS disappointed at some of the so-called Morton ‘supporters’ at the abuse they gave to the players and Douglas Rae at the Stenhousemuir game.

Firstly, to me a true supporter follows their team through the good and bad times as I have done for 66 years (hopefully for many more) and can voice their opinions in other ways.

Secondly, those fans who want the Raes out, there is nobody about willing to put their money in a loss-making club unless they want to take over and sell off all the assets (eg Hugh Scott) and then you have no club. The only fault Douglas Rae has had over the years has been his choice of managers not getting us up to the Premiership as he stated when he took over the club.
