The two clubs have reached an agreement for the local derby match to take place on Friday 24 July at Ravenscraig Stadium.

Ton kick-off their new season the following day with the first round of the Petrofac Training Cup, so the majority of their side for the friendly will be made up of development squad players and any first team regulars who are unavailable for the tie next day.

Newly-appointed Cappielow development coach Andy Millen will take charge of the Ton select.

The juniors — who hope the clash will boost club coffers — expect it to be an exciting game with a party atmosphere after a successful season for both teams.

Greenock treasurer Neil Martin said: “It’s a good opportunity particularly with Morton winning the league and for us staying mid-table in one of the toughest league seasons in years, especially when four teams went down. So there’s a bit of a celebration in a sense and Morton will show off their trophy. Hopefully it will also generate income for ourselves.

“It’s a good pre-season friendly — it ticks a lot of boxes. We are thankful to Morton for agreeing to play.” The game will be one of the first matches in charge for former Morton player and the club’s new under-20s chief Millen.

Millen said: “This will be a good challenge for the young players against a junior team and I look forward to the game.” A kick-off time and other details have still to be finalised, but Morton director Warren Hawke says he’s looking forward to a good test and is pleased Morton can help out another local football side.

Hawke said: “I am delighted we are supporting the Greenock Juniors in this match and assisting in their fundraising activities.

“Hopefully the match will attract a number of supporters and enable a boost to their finances on the eve of the new season.

“A special mention must also go out to our sponsors Inverclyde Windows and Saveheat, two local companies who are supporting both these teams and assisted in arranging this match.” Greenock officials believe there will be a feisty competitive element to the game as the sides have not faced one another for some time.

Treasurer Mr Martin said: “It’s been a few years since we last played Morton.

“Roughly over the last 20 years we’ve played a Morton team every four years.

“We are expecting a tough game but there will be no favourites.

“There will be a wee edge to it for both clubs — there will be a bit of home pride at stake and both squads will want to win.” Greenock Juniors are sponsored by Saveheat.
